LALP Named DC YLAI Cohort Ambassador

Georgetown University's Latin America Leadership Program received a sub-award from the U.S. Department of State to be the Cohort Ambassador for the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) - Washington DC. The 2021 program was developed by IREX in coordination with the Department of State, in partnership with host institutions, city cohort ambassadors, and other partners.

The Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) is a U.S. Department of State Professional Fellows Program that empowers entrepreneurs and innovative civil society leaders from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada to strengthen capacity and advance their entrepreneurial ideas to contribute to social and economic development in their communities and region. Since the initiative’s launch in 2015, more than 750 YLAI Professional Fellows have expanded their leadership and entrepreneurial experience through fellowships at businesses and organizations across the United States. Through the YLAI Entrepreneurship Institute and the individualized Fellowships, YLAI Fellows have accelerated their commercial and social ventures’ success and developed specific action plans to carry out upon return to their home countries. YLAI Fellows build networks, linkages, and lasting partnerships to attract investments and support for their entrepreneurial ventures.

YLAI 2021 program was held virtually from January 11, 2021, till April 16, 2021, and concluded with a closing plenary forum. The whole YLAI 2021 cohort was composed of 263 fellows representing 37 countries, from Latin America and the Caribbean, and Canada, who expanded their leadership and entrepreneurial experience through fellowships at businesses and organizations in 20 cities across the United States. YLAI participants were placed in individually tailored virtual fellowships with businesses and non-profits in 21 cities across the U.S. to develop entrepreneurship and leadership skills, share best practices, and forge commercial ties, with the support of City Cohort Ambassadors, such as Georgetown University's Latin America Leadership Program.

Out of these 263 young leaders, LALP served as Washington DC YLAI City Cohort Ambassador, welcoming 14 fellows spanning Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, St Lucia, and Venezuela. As the City Cohort Ambassador, LALP convened YLAI DC fellows virtually for a city cultural orientation and for four weeks of program learning on entrepreneurship and leadership to support their professional development and foster cross-cultural understanding.
