The Global Business Executive Leadership (GBEL) Alumni Committee invited GBEL alumni to the second session of the talk series “From One to Many,” an initiative created to strengthen connections and promote continuous learning within the GBEL alumni community. 

This series provides a space for the meaningful exchange of knowledge and experience between GBEL alumni and influential business leaders from across Latin America and the Caribbean.

A Conversation with Albert Douer

In this session, Albert Douer shared his perspectives on innovation, leadership, and how to shape a vision for a better future. His experience offered valuable insights for alumni seeking to make a positive impact within their organizations and communities. He also explored key themes such as self-confidence in a global highly competitive landscape, reinvention, long-term vision, risk-taking, perseverance, and challenging the impossible.

Albert Douer is Chairman and CEO of UBQ Materials. Founded in 2012, UBQ created a pioneering bio-based sustainable material, UBQ™, made entirely of mixed household waste, including all organics.

For the first 35 years of his career, Mr. Douer worked at the Darnel Group, where he and his father grew a small family business in Colombia into a leader in the construction materials and food packaging industry with operations in over 15 countries.

At Darnel, Mr. Douer developed the understanding and skills required to drive his commitment to the transformation of the materials industry. Today, in addition to leading UBQ Materials, he is a board member of Daika Wood, a company turning wood waste back into virgin wood, saving forests and natural habitats, and Biotic, an early startup developing natural polymers to replace plastic in food packaging.

He also serves as a board member of Endeavor, a global organization that supports high-impact entrepreneurs and mentors a myriad of innovators. Mr. Douer received his A.B. in Economics at Harvard University and an MBA in Accounting and Finance from the Wharton School of Business.

Organized by the GBEL Alumni Committee and led by Fernanda De Mora and Florencia Rizzardi (GBEL 2024), the “From One to Many” series aims to build a strong, collaborative alumni network. The initiative supports ongoing professional development and encourages cooperation in business and leadership efforts across the region.
