GCL 2010 Alumna New Minister of Economy and Finance of Peru

In October 2019, the President of the Republic of Peru, Mr. Martin Vizcarra, appointed María Antonieta Alva, an economist and Global Competitiveness Leadership Program (GCL 2010) alumna, as the new Minister of Economy and Finance of Peru, replacing Carlos Oliva.

As the new Minister, Alva is leading Latin America’s most ambitious economic plan to help mitigate the impact of a global coronavirus pandemic. The stimulus plan, worth around 12% of the gross domestic product, aims to create liquidity and support the most vulnerable communities in the face of this health crisis.

The new Minister was previously Director-General of Public Budgets of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, where she was in charge, among other roles, of coordinating the design and approval process of public sector budget laws in 2018 and 2019.

Alva is a graduate of the University of the Pacific, has a master's degree in public administration from Harvard University, and served as general director of Public Budget for two years. The new minister has been head of the Strategic Planning and Budget Unit of the Ministry of Education, and advisor in the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis). Her #GCL project was Ankay, an association that provides university scholarships to underprivileged youth.
